Strategic Planning - atrial fibrillation
Situation:
-
Our client was engaged in thrombosis research and wanted to gain a better understanding of opportunities in atrial fibrillation (AF).
-
They specifically required information based on ´real-world´data drawn from US clinical practice.
IMS HEOR Approach:
-
IMS HEOR undertook a retrospective analysis of healthcare claims data
-
Using the PharMetrics Patient-Centric Database more than 48,000 patients were stratified according to stroke risk and treatment paradigm.
-
Analysis included use of Cox models to examine event risk, resource utilization, treatment associated side effects and annual costs.
Outcome:
-
IMS HEOR identified cost-saving potential associated with use of anti-thrombotics versus alternate procedures such as cardioversion.
-
Based upon the information gathered our client was able to run multiple cost-benefit simulations for their developmental compound, and thus identify future opportunities and appropriate clinical development directions.
-
Prior to launching their own product, the client was able to utilize gathered information to increase awareness of the economic burden of AF and the value of appropriate pharmacotherapy.
